WHAT WE DO

David Garro Landscapes specialises in residential landscape construction across Melbourne.

Projects often combine multiple landscape elements into a cohesive outdoor space. From pool surrounds and paving through to fencing, planting and lighting, each component is carefully planned and constructed to ensure durability and a well-integrated finished result.

Some clients approach with completed landscape plans, while others are still exploring ideas for their outdoor space. We are happy to work with existing designs or assist with layout ideas and material selection to help guide the direction of the project.

The services below represent the key elements we install as part of our landscape construction projects.

Pool Coping

Pool coping forms the functional edge and visual frame of a swimming pool. We specialise in the supply and installation of natural stone coping for both concrete and fibreglass pools, covering rectangular, curved, and custom pool designs.

Coping profiles include dropface, square edge, and bullnose depending on the desired aesthetic and pool construction. Careful set-out and installation ensures accurate alignment, consistent joints, and proper integration with surrounding paving and pool surrounds.

We also undertake all required caulking beneath the copers to allow for movement and long-term durability. Premium natural stone and associated accessories can also be supplied, including hidden skimmer lids and inspection openings designed to integrate seamlessly into the finished pool area.

  • Attention to detail in set-out and consistent joint lines

  • Premium natural stone with high-quality integrated accessories

  • Flexible caulking beneath copers to allow for movement and durability

Paving

We undertake the supply and installation of paving across a wide range of styles including rectangular paving, French pattern, Ashlar pattern, crazy paving, cobblestones, and step stones.

The majority of paving we install is laid on rigid concrete bases, providing a stable and durable foundation suited to pool surrounds, pathways, and outdoor entertaining areas. In some situations flexible paving may be appropriate, installed over a compacted crushed rock base with a sand bedding layer. Careful preparation and compaction of the base is critical to the long-term stability of the paving installation.

Drainage is incorporated where required, ranging from standard grated drains through to architectural drainage systems designed to integrate cleanly with surrounding paving and pool areas. Caulking is also installed where required to allow for movement where paving meets structures or pool coping.

Not all pavers are created equal. Lower-quality products can suffer from inconsistent colouring between batches, excessive holes within the stone, chalky surface material, or pavers that vary in size and thickness. We work with trusted premium suppliers to ensure consistent, high-quality materials that deliver a refined and durable finished result. Natural stone paving can also be sealed where required to assist with protection and ongoing maintenance.

  • Premium paving materials sourced from trusted suppliers

  • Rigid or flexible paving bases prepared as the foundation of the installation

  • Drainage and caulking incorporated where required

Concrete Works

Concrete forms the structural foundation for many outdoor areas including driveways, pathways, pool surrounds, and entertaining spaces. We undertake the installation of concrete slabs that may serve as finished surfaces or as bases for paving installations.

We offer a range of concrete finishes including plain concrete, exposed aggregate, and pavilion finish depending on the project requirements and the desired appearance of the space.

The quality of a concrete installation begins with proper preparation. Base preparation and compaction are carried out to ensure the slab is properly supported, with drainage incorporated where required to manage water around the installation. Reinforcement is installed as required and control joints are cut into the slab to allow for natural movement as the concrete cures.

Exposed aggregate and pavilion finishes are sealed where required to enhance the appearance of the surface and provide protection from staining and weathering.

  • Plain, exposed aggregate, and pavilion concrete finishes

  • Base preparation, compaction, and reinforcement supporting the slab

  • Drainage and control joints incorporated where required

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are used to manage changes in ground levels and create stable, usable areas within the landscape.

We construct retaining walls using a range of materials including treated timber sleepers, concrete sleepers, and reinforced concrete blockwork depending on the structural requirements and the desired appearance. Timber and concrete sleepers can be left natural or painted to suit the surrounding landscape, with concrete sleepers also available in a range of architectural finishes.

Concrete block retaining walls can be finished with natural stone cladding, rendered surfaces, or constructed using architectural blocks where a finished face is desired.

Proper preparation is essential to the performance of a retaining wall. Footings and structural support are installed where required, with drainage incorporated behind the wall to relieve hydrostatic pressure. This ensures the wall is built to last and helps prevent structural failure over time.

  • Timber sleeper, concrete sleeper, and concrete block retaining walls

  • Structural footings and support where required

  • Drainage incorporated behind the wall to relieve hydrostatic pressure

Fencing

Fencing provides security, privacy, and definition to outdoor spaces while contributing to the overall appearance of the landscape.

We install a range of boundary fencing styles including timber paling, Colorbond, and picket fencing. Pool fencing options include glass fencing as well as rod (pick) fencing and blade fencing depending on the desired appearance and compliance requirements.

Where pool fencing is involved, we consider compliance requirements as part of the installation. This may include installing 60-degree compliance rails or fence extensions to existing fencing, or adjusting gate hardware such as latches and hinges to meet current pool safety requirements.

Gates are installed where required as part of the fencing layout, designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding fence.

Glass pool fencing can also be treated with protective coatings to assist with ongoing maintenance and help reduce water spotting.

  • Boundary and pool fencing systems

  • Gates incorporated into the fencing layout where required

  • Pool compliance considerations addressed as part of the installation

Decorative Screens

Decorative and privacy screens provide visual interest while improving privacy and defining outdoor spaces.

We construct screens using a range of materials including castellation cladding and timber battens, as well as planted feature screens such as Star Jasmine. Cement sheet screens can also be installed and finished to suit the surrounding architecture, including painted or rendered finishes, with other cladding materials available depending on the design.

Screens can incorporate integrated gates or access panels where required and may also be used as part of fencing layouts to provide privacy while maintaining a cohesive appearance across the landscape.

  • Architectural screening materials including castellation cladding and timber battens

  • Integrated gates and access panels where needed

  • Planted feature screens such as Star Jasmine for natural privacy

Decking

Decking provides a warm and functional outdoor surface often used around pools, entertaining areas, and transitions between different landscape spaces. It can also be a practical solution where outdoor areas are elevated, allowing height differences to be managed without the need for significant fill.

We construct decks using both natural timber and composite decking materials depending on the project requirements and maintenance preferences. Proper framing and structural preparation ensure the deck is stable, durable, and suited to the surrounding landscape conditions.

Natural timber decking can also be stained where required to enhance the appearance of the timber and provide protection from weathering. Decking installations can incorporate steps or stairs and may also include integrated screening or built-in elements such as bench seating to complement the overall design.

  • Timber and composite decking materials

  • Deck structures including steps and stairs

  • Integrated screening and built-in seating where required

Landscape Edging

Landscape edging provides a clean and defined transition between different surfaces within the landscape, such as lawn, garden beds, paving, and concrete areas.

In many cases paved or concrete surfaces naturally form the edge between materials. Where a dedicated edge is required we install a range of edging options including steel edging, natural stone, brick, and timber depending on the desired appearance and project requirements.

Steel edging is commonly used as our standard option due to its durability and ability to create clean, continuous lines through the landscape. It also allows both straight runs and smooth curves to be formed, making it well suited to a wide range of landscape designs.

Natural stone and brick edging can be installed as a premium option, typically laid on a concrete footing to create a strong and long-lasting structural edge.

Where edging begins to retain soil and create height, this typically transitions into a retaining wall or planter box structure.

  • Defined transitions between lawn, garden beds, and paving

  • Straight runs or smooth curves to suit the landscape layout

  • Steel, natural stone, brick, or timber edging options available

Natural & Artificial Grass

Natural and artificial grass areas help soften the landscape and provide usable outdoor spaces for recreation, relaxation, and visual balance within the garden.

Natural turf is installed with appropriate soil preparation to support healthy growth and long-term performance. A range of turf varieties are available depending on the conditions of the site, including options suited to shade, drought tolerance, pet use, and varying maintenance preferences.

Artificial grass is installed on a compacted crushed rock base with defined edging to create a stable and well-drained surface. It offers a low-maintenance alternative to natural turf and can be a practical solution for smaller areas where a consistent green surface is desired.

  • Lush natural turf or low-maintenance artificial grass options

  • Natural turf varieties suited to different site conditions

  • Artificial grass installed on a properly compacted crushed rock base

Planting

Planting brings colour, texture, and seasonal variation into the landscape, helping to soften built elements and complete the overall garden design.

We supply and install a wide range of plants suited to the conditions of the site and the surrounding landscape. Plant selection considers factors such as sunlight, soil conditions, maintenance requirements, and the overall style of the project.

Garden beds are prepared prior to planting and typically finished with weed mat and either mulch or decorative stones to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Irrigation and landscape lighting can also be incorporated to support plant health and highlight key areas of the garden.

  • Plant supply and installation suited to the landscape

  • Plant selection based on site conditions and maintenance preferences

  • Garden beds finished with weed mat, mulch, or decorative stones

Irrigation

Irrigation systems, sometimes referred to as reticulation, help maintain healthy lawns and garden beds by providing consistent and reliable watering throughout the landscape.

We install irrigation systems suited to the layout of the garden, typically using drip irrigation for garden beds and sprinkler systems for lawn areas. These systems are designed to distribute water evenly and support plant health across different areas of the landscape.

Irrigation can range from simple tap timers for smaller systems through to fully automated solenoid-controlled systems for larger installations. These systems allow zonal control of watering areas and can be operated using manual controllers, Bluetooth, or WiFi-enabled controllers, with optional features such as rain sensors.

  • Drip irrigation for garden beds and sprinklers for lawn areas

  • Automated systems with zonal control where required

  • Controller options including manual, Bluetooth, WiFi, and rain sensors

Lighting

Landscape lighting enhances the appearance of outdoor spaces while improving usability and safety after dark.

Lighting can be installed throughout the landscape to highlight garden beds, pathways, trees, and architectural features. Carefully positioned fixtures help create subtle illumination that complements the surrounding landscape without overpowering the space.

Lighting is best considered early in the project so provisions can be made for conduits beneath paving or concrete and access to garden areas. Power to the system is typically provided by an electrician and may be connected to internal switches, transformers, or automated controls depending on the installation.

  • Garden and pathway lighting to improve usability after dark

  • Feature lighting to highlight plants and architectural elements

  • Lighting provisions planned during the landscape construction
